Russell Mayer

Russell Mayer serves as the interim assistant vice provost for educational effectiveness and assessment and the chief accreditation liaison officer (ALO). In this role, he leads university assessment, accreditation, and institutional change efforts to enhance learning environments and respond to the needs of learners in the 21st century.

Mayer is co-chair of the WSCUC Steering Committee and leads the Assessment Advisory Committee, among other responsibilities. He previously served as the accreditation liaison officer at two institutions and served as primary author of successful 10-year reaffirmation self-study accreditation documents. In these roles, AVP Mayer led efforts to engage data-driven decision making.

Prior to joining LMU, Mayer served as interim vice president and chief learning officer at St. Joseph’s College in Maine. Over the course of his 25-year career in Catholic higher education he has been a provost, vice president for institutional effectiveness and strategic initiatives, faculty senate president, and department chair. He has also received appointments as an American Council on Education fellow at Salem State University and as a research fellow at the Harvard University-MIT Data Center.

After earning his Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Michigan and his undergraduate degree from Wesleyan, Mayer began his career as faculty at Merrimack College, where he earned tenure and the rank of full professor, and where his teaching and research focused on mass political behavior, research methods, public policy, civic engagement, and the scholarship of teaching and learning.
